Ryukins

Red Ryukin goldfish are a short fat bodied fish with a hump near the shoulder area. They usually have metallic type scales and long flowing fins. The tail fin is forked and anal fins paired. A very pretty fish which is very hardy. |
Lionheads

These fish are very similar to the Oranadas as they too have a rasberry shaped head, they lack the dorsal fin like most other species, There bodies are short and deep with a hump like back. The fins on the lionheads are also shorter than their cousins. |
Ranchus

Ranchus are very much similar to lionheads and are very commonly mistaken for one another. They are short bodied/rounded fish with short double tails. They also have no dorsal fin, and possess a lesser developed headgrowth which covers entire top of head and face area. They differ from lionheads in that: they have a more pronounced curvature of the back and caudal fin and their profile is more round; whereas a lionhead's profile is more rectangular. They grow to about 12 -16 cm in length.

Orandas

Orandas are an unusual looking fish as they are often referred to as having their brains on the outside of their head. More like a rasberry covering it entire head except the eyes and mouth region. Lovely flowing fins like the orandas and fantails. These fish can grow to 20-25cm in length. The Oranda Goldfish comes in many colors, including the Red Cap, Red, Red/Black, Blue, Red/White, Calico, Chocolate, and Black Oranda. |
Celestials

The celestial was originally bred in asia so that the fish was looking up at the emperor. Once again the celestial is very similar to fantails except they have large bulging eyes that point upwards. These fish are rather slow so it's best to keep them with other fat bodied fish like fantails and telescopes so that they don't miss out on food at feeding time. |
Fantails

Similar to the Ryukin except this fish has an egg shaped body and lacks the hump near the shoulder area. The fins are also similar to the ryukin but a little shorter. |
Comets and Shubunkins (Common Goldfish)

Comets and shubunkins have evenly proportioned bodies and fins and can grow to a size of upto 25cm in length. The comets have a shallow v or folk shape to it's tail fin. Shubunkins are exactly the same as comets except they have more colour variations in them, Common colours of the shubunkin are black(or bluish), gold and yellowish red markings throughout it's body. Comets and Shubunkins make ideal first fish pets as they are very hardy fish and more forgiving than some of the fancier breeds. |
Conditioning Tap Water
All tap water contains hazards like chlorine, chloramine and various disolved metals such as copper? So what I hear you ask! Well these are very dangerous to your fishes health, They damage the fishes gills and cause illness and even worse death!
When replacing water in your aquarium always add the recommended dose of water ager so that the harmful chemicals are removed. If your not sure what water ager is ask us next time you visit our store and we can show you how to use it.
Water Hardness gH
Goldfish prefer a general hardness level of around 250-350ppm! Water ager is basically the amount of disolved salts, mainly calcium and magnesium present in the water. Tap water around Melbourne usually sits on a Gh of about 30ppm. This level of disolved salts is way to low for your goldfish to live a happy life. Adding water conditioner to your water at the recommended dosage rate lifts your Gh(General Hardness) to the correct levels. Your fish will thank you for it!
If your not sure what water conditioner is ask us next time you visit our store and we can show you how to use it.
